Drafting the Back Pattern

Using a ruler and a pencil, very lightly mark a grid on the wood, as shown in Figure 1.

Next use a compass and draw a circles the appropriate diameters, bearing lightly so as not to indent the wood. Note the color marks in the diagrams; you will draw a total of 8 circles. See figures 2, 3, & 4. (The lighter circles in figures 3&4 are previously drawn circles.)

When you have drawn all 8 circles you should have something like figure 5 (pattern part 4). Use your pencil to trace an 'L' on each side, one square down from the bottom of the curve. See red lines in figure 5.

Now you can either use a ball point pen to trace the lines you'll keep or you can erase around them. (figure 6)

To cut out the pattern, drill a couple of holes in the inner cuts. Clamp the piece well and cut along the lines with a jig saw.

Once it's all cut out you should have a piece that looks like figure 7.
