My dagger version of the Kirkburn sword. I bought a stainless steel blade blank at Pennsic XXIII and finally got around to doing something with it two years later. I used my dad's grinder to put an edge on it, and then sanded it smooth. For the hilt, I used a jigsaw and a Dremel tool to cut a piece of pine, and then sanded it smooth by hand. After penciling in the enamel designs, I used a pen to make a slight indentation, and then silver-leafed the hilt. I used red enamel paint to fill in the design area before putting a clear lacquer coat over the whole thing. The "jewels" are glued-on plastic cabochons. I couldn't find glass. Eventually I plan to make a much closer replica using more period materials, but that's another project put on hold due to resources, finances and motivation. The documentation for this project can be found in Simon James' "The World of the Celts". |
